President Announcement – Trophy Presentation event cancelled

Dear Patron, #1 Ticket Holder, Life Members, Members, Parents & Players
It is with great disappointment and after a fair bit of deliberation with the committee, we have decided not to have an end of season trophy presentation for season 2021/22.
The reasons for this are pretty simple, the COVID-19 protocols and restrictions that are currently in force and the extensions to these in the coming weeks make it almost impossible to hold a celebratory night at the club or at a licensed venue, without being heavily restricted.
The players/members who are receiving awards this season will still receive them, I believe Darrell Kelsey is picking the trophies/awards up somewhere near to the 2/4 and we will organize how we distribute them shortly as we haven’t organized that as of yet.
What we will be doing is a virtual presentation online and announcing the winners on all our social platforms as well as our website. With our girls/ladies playing in Grand Finals this weekend, I believe we will do this next week once the amazing John Walter has had time to upload them all. Thanks, JW for all your work with communications and the help you have received from Sam Williams!
Firstly on behalf of the committee, I want to congratulate all the winners of awards this season and apologize for not having an evening to celebrate your achievements this season.
Secondly, I would like to congratulate the club on an incredible season, even after the myriad of disruptions we had in the lead-up, losing a coach and four of our best senior players – to make finals in 2nd’s, 3rd’s, 4th’s, 17’s & 15’s is amazing and to make the Grand Finals in the Women’s B Grade 40 Over against the monkey towners and the Female Youth League 40 Over against Melville is beyond our wildest dreams! Well done to all involved.
I just wanted to say a special thanks to a few people, Wayne Pearson for stepping up as Director of Coaching, 3 weeks from the start of the season, that was beyond difficult for you mate and we appreciate all that you have done in a difficult time and look forward to you you having a full pre-season with the lads next year moving into 2022/23.
The executive – Vice President Shane Maraldo & Secretary Darrell Kelsey, I couldn’t do it without you two, thanks for your work and support. The cricket department, head of women’s cricket Pete Byrne – Junior Female-Coordinator you have been amazing mate, I have never worked with anyone so passionate and thorough and we are so lucky to have you. Thank you also to Shenae Reichelt for making this the most professional on-field program I have seen also, we love having you as a Roo Shenae!
Thank you to Ian PoulterJoel CharlesDave Spangenberg and the rest of the crew in what has been a massive improvement through the grades this year and fingers crossed we are back to the best in A Grade next season! also Greg Holly for all his work on what I believe to be the best junior male program in the state, which he has re-built! well done mate – Also to all your junior coaches and supporters, thank you! Michael Dargie, what would we do without all you do around the club and grounds, thanks mate! Kevin Walker, what do I say about you mate? Micheal Minear, thanks again Dad for all your help whether it be behind the bar, as our delegate, emptying bins, helping me, whatever it is, you had done your time ten years ago and you still help 22 years after first joining the committee and 9 years since being President! Thanks so much, Dad!
Last but not least DanielandTenille Stumpers for both of your help this year, Lindsay Holly & Soula Billington for doing teas all year, I can’t thank you enough and couldn’t do anything without you ladies and your helpers, Dave Bebb for all your work with the Darts, Female Cricket and Scoring thank you, Jimmy Skouros for all your work early on equipment for the club, Sandy Wheeler for being our #1 scorer! also Geoff Millar for your tireless work doing all the camera work week in and week out mate! We are so lucky to have you at Wanneroo DCC!
Lastly, I just wanted to thank and congratulate our outgoing 4 times Premiership Player (3 x 2day & 1 x T20) and current club captain Kyle Millar, mate I have been so lucky to watch you grow from a cheeky little character into a wonderful leader of men, I could not be any more proud of you, thank you for all your sacrifices and efforts as skipper the past few years and as a player in A grade for the last 12 or so! You are a club legend mate!
I have a meeting with WACA CEO next Tuesday Christina Matthews to discuss our new building that has been designed by Sean Magorian and I believe we are garnering a lot of support for this as well as from our #1 Ticket Holder Tracey Roberts who is right behind it as well! The future is looking very bright at our wonderful club. Please get down and walk the dog and support our girls in there Grand Finals on Sunday.

Rockingham-Mandurah 7/123 (Jones 2/30) def. by Wanneroo 6/226 (Reichelt 114*, Jesani 53)

The Female Roos have been pushing boundaries this year, with new team and individual records, and this game was no exception.

Away to RMCC, the Roos were in first, unfortunately losing Megs for no score. Emilie then joined Shenae at the crease and things started to get moving for the visitors. Emilie raced to 20 off 30, but at 2/43, things were looking better. That became 3/44 with the loss of Kristen, but Shayna joining Shenae was a key turning point in this game. What ensued was a 130 run 4th wicket partnership – those who’d made the trek to Lark Hill were rewarded for the effort. Shayna played with class, racing to 53 or only 55 deliveries – what an innings!

With time running out, the remaining Roo batters had two objectives – to get well past 200 and to see Shenae to her maiden ton. Both things happened, as Bron, Eva and then Sarah did the team thing, rotating the strike back to Shenae as much as possible. Great to see the team apply the learning after Shenae was left on 99* earlier in the year – well done team!! Shenae came off the field with 114* (off 130) to warm applause. The 17’s had been following it a world away at Kingsway and also sent up a cheer when the coach went past 100. Roos looking comfy at 6/226 and a new team scoring record.

The score looked well beyond Rocky, and tight opening spells from Josie and Emma (1/25) made it even more difficult. The scoring rate slowed even further as Emilie (1/13 off 7), Shenae (12 off 5) and Bree (1/9 off 5) all turned in super economical performances with the ball. Kristen also enjoyed success, claiming 2/30 off her full complement of 8 overs – great reward for effort! Three bowleds, a catch, a stumping and 2 run outs tell you that this was a pretty clinical performance in the field, as Rocky finished at 7/123.

B grade sits second with one round to play. Go you Roos!!

Wanneroo 149 (Crafford 73) def. Rockingham-Mandurah 48 (Haddrill 2/6, Stillitano 2/10)

The Roos welcomed Rockingham to Kingsway 1 and had first use of a true looking deck. We welcomed Abbie Millis to the team as 12th for her first run in the Youth League.

We lost Talia and Chloe early, to see us at 2/16, but Tene was steadily building at the other end. Soph and Tene steadied the ship for a while, building a 20 run stand before Soph departed. This brought Laya to the crease who made her intent very obvious – a nice array of shots through gaps on her way to a score of 15 and another solid partnership (33 runs) getting us to 4/69. With Tene soldiering on, her partnership with Mathilda was the highlight of the innings – the girls notched 38 together and looked super comfortable. A strong feature of the innings up to this point had been good running between wickets and these two really continued in that vein. Mathilda fell for a well made 21 off just 30. Myla, fresh from the 14s Carnival played some good shots, as she supported getting Tene back on strike, and another 20 run partnership was the result. Polly also supported the team plan – vital in the back overs to keep the score building. Spud went soon after Polly was dismissed, and in the end, Tene’s was the last wicket to fall – an amazing knock of 73 off just 84 rocks and pretty much chanceless!

The Roos total of 149 looked OK, but they’d left 7 overs out on the field and perhaps missed a chance to push to 200. With Shayna up in B Grade, Tene took the reins on the field and her opening quartet of bowlers did her proud. All four bowled impeccable line and length and all claimed wickets as a result. Aymie was swinging it from the hand, picking up 2/6 off her 4 overs. Chloe (1/12) sent the bails flying with a sharply rising nut, whilst Talia was incredibly miserly, giving away just 4 runs in her 4 over spell and also netting the prize wicket. Buckets (Mathilda), who was having a day out in her first game back after Christmas, reeled in 2/10, including a fabulous caught and bowled!

Tene then brought in her next quartet – Layla (1/8), Steph (1/4), Brooke (1/2) and Polly (1/1) to see Rocky bundled out for just 48. Important to recognise that for Steph, Brooke and Polly, these were their first scalps in the Female Youth League! All five Under 14 players made a solid contribution to the result – well done girls. Also need to acknowledge the outstanding ground fielding, throwing and catching from the entire team – looked amazing from the sidelines and really kept the batters under pressure!

Youth League sit top with 2 rounds to play.

Mens Grade

It was a case of the home side triumphing this week in mens grade as the Roos took on Subi-Floreat. At Kingsway 1 the Two’s got up in a strong team performance. Mitch Slattery, Aryan Varsani, Michael Kelsey and Hayden Stumpers all making the paper with their batting (iced with a Darcy Forssman bomb) – setting up a nice limited overs total of 5/237. The defense was rocky however, as with an already under-strength bowling lineup one Matthew Carroll and ‘the one’ Adam Smith were both injured without completing a combined over. Aryan Varsani and Jacob Bonner put on their bowling shoes and all-up the team were able to restrict Subi to 7/218.

Across the field the 4s had a copy-paste result. Batting first, going at 5 an over and then restricting Subi to 20 runs shy. Big props to ‘the next allrounder the tabloids will inevitably compare to Kallis’, Cody Billington who scored 53 off 42 coming in at 8.

At Floreat the 1s failed to get any traction with the batting as they attempted to chase a run a ball target. Michael O’Day took three wickets and Connor Spangenberg batted well with 29*.

At Alderbury the Threes were in for a scrap against the top of the table Subi side. Kane Pearce batted well with 54 and John Walter and Nicholas Santich finished off the innings to get to an ok score of 181. However with run-rate pressure never really being an issue Subi didn’t need to take big risks and were able to pass the total in the final over. 2 wickets each to the Quelch’s and Jordan Slattery.

Wanneroo 10/223 (Richards 53, Billington 43, Millar 33, Spangenberg 25) def. by Scarborough 5/319 (O’Day 2/37, Holly 2/51)

Our round 13 clash with Scarborough got underway with the boys pumped up about fresh blood entering the team. An honoured Sharad Jessani had his cap presentation by A Grade legend Rob Richards. Shortly after the toss followed with the roos winning the toss and decided to bowl first. The overjoyed roos were up and about and ready to get stuck into the Scarborough top order.

Caiden Eaton and Lachlan Poulter started proceedings for us with the bowl. The pair created pressure and catching opportunities which were unfortunately not taken and the Scarborough opening pair got settled. Unable to break the opening stand early, Scarborough got off to a perfect start with a 145-run opening partnership. From this point on it was a tough it out battle mentally and physically for the Roos as the weather temperature and the run rate from the Scarborough batters increased. Michael O`Day (10 Overs 2/37) was the standout performer for the Roos through the middle overs but couldn’t build sustained pressure together to create wickets or stop run flow. Riley Holly (7 Overs (2/51) at the death gave everything and tried to get the Roos back in the game. Scarborough dominated the first innings and put 319 on the board with the loss of 5 wickets with Roos requiring 320 for victory.

Heading into the second innings the Roos were confident with the talent with the bat and a flat Kingsway wicket would lead to an interesting run chase. Robert Richards and Kyle Miller ensured no early wickets were lost and had a decent opening stand of 74 until Kyle Miller was dismissed for a valiant 33(53). Riley Holly joined Rob in their pursuit for this mammoth target of 320. However when the loss of the key wicket Rob Richards 53(80) the game swung in the favour of Scarborough. Young gun (mini Trav apparently) Connor Spangenberg 25(25) and Deon Billington 43(31) put some pressure back on the Scarborough bowlers. However, wickets continued to fall and Scarborough had full control of the game. With the regular fall of wickets the Roos fell well short of their target being bowled out for 223. Plenty of learning and exposure was had and only upwards and forwards from here. Bring on Round 14 opponent Subiaco Floreat.

Wanneroo 166 (Quelch 35, Williams 34, Walter 30*, Rae 29) def. Scarborough 8/159 (Wiggers 3/19, Quelch 2/28, Walter 2/33)

The Threes looked to continue their red-hot form on a scorching day at Kingsway with captain Walts winning the toss and electing to bat. Openers Jayden Rae (29) and Sam Williams (34) got us off to the perfect start putting on 57 for the first wicket. However, after Beugs then departed for the second wicket with the score at 83 after 16 overs it was pure carnage from there as the roos collapsed losing 8-21. Josh Quelch (35) then joined Walts (30*) at the crease needing to dig deep and bat long. The pair were able to see out the overs putting on 62 for the final wicket getting us to a very competitive 166.

With the ball the boys got off to the perfect start with Quelch getting a wicket in the first over and Walts following suit with a couple of his own a few overs later the Roos going into drinks having Scarborough 3-16. With not a lot going for us in the middle overs with a few chances not going our way, Walts threw the ball to new strike bowler Steve Wiggers who applied his nba2k takeover and had Scarborough’s middle order in all sorts walking off with 3-19 off his 9 overs. With scarbs needing around a run a ball for the last 10 overs, Q (2-28), Walts (2-33) and Owen Brown were able to hold their nerve and get the boys home with a 7 run win.

Fourth Grade

Scarborough 6/102 (Carroll 3/24, Maunder 2/14) def Wanneroo 99 (Hall 50)

Another scorching Saturday had the top placed 4s versing the fourth placed Scarborough at Abbett park. Another important toss win for the skipper and chose to bat. The innings never really getting going, with the boys losing constant wickets and not getting any luck with some interesting LBW calls. Allan Hall the only stand out in the innings smashing 50 off as many balls but not having anyone to stay with him. We were eventually bowled out for 99.

The 4s knew we’d have to make early in roads to have any hope in the match and the skipper got us off to a perfect start striking with a plumb LBW in the first over….. Carroll took another one a few overs later then followed by some fantastic bowling from Juice Maunder and great catching from Goat Billington had Scarborough 4 down and looking shaky. Scarborough put together a couple of partnerships which took the game away from the 4s. We fought hard having them 6 down but in the end were 50-80 runs short of we’re we needed to be.

The 4s remain top with other teams losing around them, onto next week 🦘

The Under 14 girls enjoyed a double header on Sunday against Perth and Midland-Guilford.

Match 1 vs Perth

In cloudy humid conditions, the Roos batted first and looked to stamp their mark early and with the ball swinging it was always going to be a challenging start to the day. Addison showed poise and class opening the batting with Polly and the team ultimately steadied with Myla and Elri (leading run scorers and consumers of Powerade due to their time in the middle) finding confidence and playing with more freedom in the middle order. Their partnership showed the grit that was required to build to a final total of 7/75.

With a coaching emphasis on building cricket IQ and leadership within the young Roos, Tegan, Polly and Spud demonstrated that the team’s bowling and fielding tactics are starting to pay off. Emmersyn softened the openers up with a few short balls followed by a fuller ball that took out leg stump. Coaches Scott, Andy and Jacques, who focussed on bowling line and length during a technical shed session on Tuesday, were all seen smiling ear to ear when the stumps were shattered.

Fielding is a strength of this emerging group and due to a strong team culture, it is clear to see the girls are starting to play for each other.

Highlights in the field included the strong reliable throwing arm of Brooke to the keeper Abbie (Womby), where bails and stumps were shattered for a swift run out. There was some pent-up frustration taken out on those stumps and the keeper was advised that just the bails need to come off for the batter to be declared out. Asha demonstrated that her years of Softball led to a very strong throwing arm from the outfield as she covered ground with ease to stop certain boundaries.

Leah, Spud and Polly all found their line and length to bowl tidy overs with minimal runs scored against. Wicket takers included Emmersyn, Brooke and Stephanie who took 1/1 off her 2 overs and threw the stumps down with an impressive run out. Polly also cleaned up the stumps with a direct hit and celebrated with style.

Perth took the win 5/76 with 3 overs to spare. The Roos have a very honest and open feedback session after each game and all agreed that bowling line and length was the key focus for the next match.

Match 2 vs Midland Guildford

Today’s weather was accurately described as Melbournian as the rain and wind set in for the afternoon creating some testing conditions for the girls who won the toss and decided to bat.

Stephanie and Polly opened the account and made the best of their chances to set the positive tone for those to follow. Tegan deconstructed the bowlers and built herself and impressive wagon wheel as she complied the team’s leading run score. After further rain delays, 5/95 was a decent total in the tough wet conditions.

The team’s bond was clearly evident to those in the dry pavilion as the girls took to the centre during the innings break for a game of mini cricket in the pelting rain celebrating together with some sort of Tik Tok dance.

When the actual innings commenced, there was a real joy in the way the girls pushed the rain and testing conditions to one side and chatter and chirps were up and about.

The team was sharp which resulted in three run outs (Stephanie, Emma, Leah). Spud bowled the perfect ever reliable line and length which ground the opening batter down and resulted in the stumps breaking. Emmersyn bowled terrific length and kept the batters pinned at the crease not knowing whether to come forward or back. During this match, the effort was clearly linked to the results as Emma and Stephanie took the opposition to task taking two wickets apiece.

In another growth moment, the newly crowned Womby(Abbie) kept up to the stumps and the spinners Tegan and Emma relished the extra pressure this placed on opposition batters and resulted in a wet soggy caught behind.

The wise words from coaches Scott and Jacques were put into practice as the girls all bowled relentless line and length including a fine maiden over from Brooke. Polly demolished the stumps and in the end Midland Guildford struggled to 8/41 and the Roos celebrated their effort with another mysterious rain dance.

The fielding was by far the best of the season with Asha, Myla and Addison again demonstrating their speed and strong throwing arms.

The continued growth that the team are bravely making will be exciting to see when it all comes together in the one game. The coaching team will continue to develop, challenge and support the team as their cricket journey continues.

First Grade

Wanneroo 161 (Billington 58*, Spangenberg 32) def. by Claremont-Nedlands 179 (Billington 3/27, Richards 2/25, Poulter 2/34)

The 1s lost the toss with Claremont electing to bat first. We started well on the back of some tight bowling by Caiden Eaton and Lachy Poulter who gave them nothing easy. The wickets came when Bailey Richards and Hayden Stumpers came on leaving Claremont at 4/68. They finished on 179 on the back of an unfortunate last wicket partnership of 50. Deon Billington finished with 3/27.

We started shakily with the bat being 3/20 before Connor Spangenberg and Jimmy Newnham started to steady things. After they both fell, the boys couldn’t get going and we were bowled out for 161 falling 19 runs short despite some resistance from Billington who finished on 58 not out.

Second Grade

Claremont-Nedlands 133 (Fryer 5/35, Slattery 3/11) and 67 (Jessani 10/30) def. OUTRIGHT by Wanneroo 9/267 (Fryer 115*, Slattery 42, Holly 32, Bonner 27, Forssman 26)

The day started with the boys all successfully passing through an RBT along West Coast Highway heading towards Creswell. It was a little downhill from there as the changerooms were under construction and with Jordan forgetting his training shorts. Captain Smudge lost the all-important toss on a hot day as Claremont elected to bat and the Roos were sent out to field. Donny “PL G.O.A.T” Fryer got the boys off to a flyer by bowling a 14th stump line and allowing Claremont to just play and nick off. A couple of small partnerships were formed by Claremont which allowed them to get to 133, with Donny taking a 5fa and Jordan Slattery taking 3. The openers Mitchell Slattery and Jacob Bonner got off to a good partnership getting to 50 before Bonner nicked off for 27.  Wanneroo ended the days play listening to the top 20 songs of the hottest 100, only 2 down and 55 runs behind.

The 2nd day started with a mini heart attack as Wanneroo lost 3-16 but Donny Fryer and Blake “Buy a lotto ticket” Holly saw the boys through passing the score 5 down. With intentions of a possible outright win looming, Donny Fryer pushed on to score a brilliant 115 off 95 not out. It seemed certain that Donny had locked in the three votes at this stage. Wanneroo declared with a lead of 135 and 50 overs left in the day. With 8 overs bowled, Wanneroo were wicket-less when Adam “Punter” Smith threw the ball to Sharad and said, “Your day mate, need you to deliver.”  Before no time Sharad had taken his first wicket, thanks to the greatest catch of all time by Darcy “Specialist bat pad” Forssman diving one hand to his right. And from that point Sharad “I’ll have a beer of I take 10fa” Jessani was taking the absolute P155 making the batsmen look silly.  It became embarrassing for the batsmen as he just worked his magic taking all 10 wickets for the match and securing the outright for Wanneroo. Michael “role player” Ardagh’s efforts cannot go unnoticed as he refused to take wickets throughout the innings bowling 12 overs for 6 maidens, allowing Sharad to take all 10 wickets.

Third Grade

Wanneroo 6/228 (Kelsey 86, Wiggers 42, Brown 32*, J Rae 31) def. OUTRIGHT Claremont-Nedlands 66 (Fitzmaurice 3/14, Walter 2/7, Brown 2/15, Quelch 2/20) and 102 (Walter 5/43, Carroll 3/13, Quelch 2/19)

The 3s lost the toss on a scorching hot day at Kingsway, and as expected were sent into the field. The pitch was plenty friendly to the bowlers so despite the heat it suited us well as Alex Fitzmaurice and Josh Quelch got us off to a flyer, 5-30 after the opening spell. From there it was pretty relaxing for the bowling side with captain Walter, Owen Brown and Mathew Carrol to bowl to the remaining of the batsman who did not know how to put away the drive. Finally knocking them over for 66 in 29.3 overs.

With the bat, Michael “Kelso” Kelsey batted superbly making a 79 run partnership with Jayden Rae. Kelsey cracked on when Rae was dismissed, making another partnership with Wiggers before getting dismissed just short of a deserved ton. Wiggers and Tyler went on to make another partnership with Wiggers making 42 off 43 before getting dismissed leaving Tyler and Walts to see out the rest of the days play. The next week we scored very quickly before declaring 6 overs into the day wanting to give us plenty of time to get the outright.

Quelchy took 2 very early on before Fitter did a side strain, leaving Walts to finish off his over. As he settled into his spell he took 2 wickets as well, leading us to an amazing position going into lunch with them 4 down again. On another hot day the Threes toiled away patiently, and wickets fell as the pressure mounted. Walts took another wicket in the middle session whilst Mathew Carroll took 3 before tea. Going back into the field after tea we wanted to get the game finished quickly, Walts took the two last wickets giving us the outright and taking 5 for himself.

Claremont-Nedlands 82 (Carroll 8/28, Walker 2/9) and 10/107 (Maunder 3/14, Santich 2/9, Douglas 2/30) def. OUTRIGHT by Wanneroo 4/341(dec) (Maraldo 141, Williams 83, Blythman 38, Douglas 32)

We kicked off day one of potentially the seasons last two day game with an absolute scorcher at Melvista Park. Roos Captain Liam Carroll won a very good toss and elected to bat. I’m not sure anyone knew what was to come. Openers Jack Maraldo and Sam Williams strutted to the crease and put on an absolute batting masterclass, posting a 192 run opening stand, Maraldo hitting his maiden century in the process showing a display of some incredible power hitting. His counterpart Williams also made an extremely solid 83 before being dismissed. After the fall of the first wicket, the rest of the top order posted another 80 quick runs with special mention to Callum “reverse sweep king” Douglas with a quick 32 from 27. Captain Carroll had seen enough and called the boys in. Declaring 4d – 341 after 65 overs, it was now time to bowl.

Liam Carroll got off to an absolute flyer, taking 2-2 in his first over, and then 2-2 again over his next two overs, and then ANOTHER wicket 3 overs later. Finishing the day with a 5fa in a session

Stumps were called when Claremont were 5-14, Carroll taking all 5 in the session. Well done Liam.

Day Two

Wanneroo came in to the second day understanding they would have to bowl all day in hot conditions in an attempt to take 15 wickets in the day and achieve an outright win. That didn’t seem to slow anything down. Liam Carroll continuing his amazing bowling performance taking a 6th wicket early on in the second day. Followed by an over of back to back wickets by young speedster Rhys Walker to have Claremont-Nedlands 8-31. The final two wickets came after a gritty 51 run fightback by the tigers but were eventually bowled out for 82 by none other than Liam Carroll who took the last two wickets and finished with figures of 8-28 from 12 overs.

2nd Innings (Follow-on)

After a quick break, Wanneroo were back on the field ready for another bowling innings chasing the outright win to put them first on the ladder. The first wicket came just four balls in with Liam Carrol dismissing an u15s player with some brutal chin music, on his trip back having a bit to say. Silly boy. The remainder of the 9 wickets fell in what felt like an eternity. Claremont clearly learning from their first innings experience. Jared Maunder bowled well with 3 good wickets including his first lbw of the season at long last. Some very handy efforts with the ball lead to Claremont’s eventual demise at 107, special mention to Douglas and Santich who both chipped in with 2 wickets each to help finish the job.

An outstanding performance by Wanneroo 4th grade to beat Claremont-Nedlands by 259 runs. Hopefully they can carry this good form into the finals. Well Played boys.

Perth started brightly with the bat, reaching 34 before a wicket fell. Josie (1/20) was the bowler to hit the stumps – in what was to be the first of 9 consecutive ‘bowleds’ in this innings. Shenae (1/10) was next to hit the stumps, followed by Talia (1/8) as the Roos targeted an awesome line and length. Cue Breeana the middle order destroyer who, like last week, cut a swathe through the opposition line-up. Bree’s three overs saw her claim 3 for 2. Awesome burst! The skipper cleverly kept the bowling changes coming, keeping Perth guessing. This resulted in Ella (1/7) and then Emma herself (1/17) also rattling the woodwork. Highlighting the depth in this bowling line up, Kristen then wheeled into the attack with immediate impact, picking up 2/1 in no time, including the ninth bowled topped off with a great stumping from Shayna to see Perth all out for 75.

Megs and Shenae got things rolling with the bat, but Perth bowled super tight early, stringing together some good maidens. Meg went for 8 and Shenae got to 16, to see the Roos at 2/32. Coming in at three, Bron, fresh from the south coast, played a really straight bat and a steady hand against the attack which thought they had a sniff of victory, as Kristen came and went (after showing good intent but unfortunately run out) and then Shayna settled in at the other end. After Bron departed, Shayna and Sarah then enjoyed a good partnership of 22, to edge us closer to victory, with Emilie (5*) and Shayna (26* off just 29) seeing the Roos home in a canter under 25 overs.

Well played ladies – top spot was well earned!

The Under 14 girls enjoyed a scratch match against Melville on astro at Clarkson in a T20.

Batting first, the Roos looked in a hurry with the bat, notching 10/59. Steph Spadaro top scored after a good stint at the crease. Other leading run scorers were Elri Erasmus, Polly Phillips and Tegan Williamson. Coach Scott identified a few areas for the girls to think about in terms of the mental approach to batting, as they prep for their Carnival games next weekend.

The Roos bowled and fielded well, working on restricting the easy singles that Melville had taken last time we played them. Live wires in the field were everywhere, with Brooke, Leah and Myla running everything down, while Elri hit the stumps from side on to pick up a classy run out. Good catches were pouched by Leah and Abbie, who turned in a good performance behind the stumps.

Wicket takers for the Roos included Elri, Steph and Tegan, with Melville finishing on 4/92.

Rockingham-Mandurah 5/175 (Billington 3/45, O’Day 2/23) def. Wanneroo 173 (Newnham 36, Del Borrello 26, Eaton 25)

A-grade on the road again down to Rocky win the toss and had a bat.

Lost couple of quick ones early and fell to 2/12 before Anthony Del Borrello from the wilderness returned to the side to put on 40 with Micky O’Day.  Unfortunately, after that partnership the boys couldn’t get going and wickets feel consistently all bowled out for 173, Jimmy Newnham top scored with 36 and Delbs 26 to get us to a challenging total on not the easiest of wickets.

Going into bowl we started slowly but begun to get on top after first drinks getting rocky 5/130, Billington chief destroyer with 3-45 and O’Day with a short pitch barrage of 2/25. Unfortunately, the Rocky boys crawled over the line.

Looking forward to some red ball cricket this week to try and get back in the wins.

Wanneroo 8/291 (Varsani 130, Pearce 72, Fryer 45*) def. Rockingham-Mandurah 153 (Fryer 4/33, Forssman 2/30, Jessani 2/30)

The Twos arrived to Kingsway knowing it was a must win match. Rockingham-Mandurah won the toss and elected to field first. Wanneroo got off to a shaky start, losing four early wickets to leave the score at 4-23. This brought together the partnership of Aryan Varsani and Kane Pearce. The two went on to bat beautifully, combining for a match-winning 198 run partnership which steered Wanneroo into a commanding position. The two punished the bowlers, with Varsani making 130 (123) and Pearce 72 (87). Some lower order hitting from Fryer (45* off 20) led the Twos to a total of 291.

With a large total on the board, Wanneroo went out to bowl with confidence. The batting group was well supported by a terrific bowling performance. Donavinn Fryer was the standout taking 4-33 from his seven overs. He was well supported by Sharad Jessani who took 2-30 off 10 and Darcy Forssman who also took 2-30 off 7. Economical bowling from Hayden Stumpers (1-20 off 10) and Michael Ardagh (0-20 off 10) helped to build pressure and ultimately led to Rockingham being dismissed for 153.

A great win for the Twos, led by Aryan’s 130, Kane’s 72 and Donavinn’s 45* and 4-33. Wanneroo now focus on their upcoming match against Claremont-Nedlands as their push towards finals continues.

Rockingham-Mandurah 174 (Carroll 3/26, Walter 3/37, Slattery 2/38, Santich 2/42) def. by Wanneroo 8/226 (Booner 94, Farrant 38, Harris 28)

The 3s won the toss and elected to bat. Jacob “bondog” Bonner and Tim “dusty” Harris got us off to a good start before Bonner sizzled Tim. Another good partnership between Bonner and Beugs gave the rest of the line-up a good platform to go from when Keeley Farrant came to the crease. He came out and hit a quick fire 38 including a few bombs, while this was happening Bondog was playing the anchor role but unfortunately sizzled himself on 94 playing a great innings. With a few quick runs at the end the 3s finished on 230.

Right from the start of the bowling innings their opening batsmen took it to our bowlers, slogging to cow what seemed like every ball. Then Nicholas ‘Tippa’ Santich came on to bowl sending both opening batsmen back with 2 really good balls… Tip bowled well during the middle overs keeping it nice and tight with the pace bowlers rotating down breeze. Going into the last 15 overs the game looked in the balance but shortly after the break Jordan “Servo” Slattery broke the vital partnership which then caused the last 6 wickets to tumble fairly  quickly, Walts and Maff picking up 3 a piece with Rocky finishing on 170. The 3s with a good win first game after the break.

Fourth Grade

Wanneroo 5/150 (Maraldo 46, Rae 39) def. Rockingham-Mandurah 149 (Fitzmaurice 4/24, Carroll 3/14, Douglas 2/31)

It was a warm day with temps reaching the mid to high 30s and skipper Leeds Carroll deciding he wants to lose the toss and allow them to send the boys into the field. Things started bang average, nothing too exciting before Alex ‘fitta’ Fitzmaurice started his spell of perfect slower ball yorkers. With fitzy trapping both openers on their massive (and I mean massive) front pads. Things looked good for the roo 4s from there with another quick wicket from LJ Carroll. Rocky put on a solid 80 run rearguard partnership but as that was broken the 4s barnstormed into the game. One notable moment had one batsmen leaving it on his leg peg, claiming the pitch did sorts when it pitched on leg and hit leg. Fitta came back on to complete his 4fa which in all seriousness probably better than Drew Porters 5fa back in round 8 in the 3s. Things got wrapped up pretty quickly thanks to a great bowling performance having rocky all out for 149.

With the pitch doing all sorts according to rocky the openers were shaking. I’ve been told not to talk about myself too much but hit some big sixes and then shortly after bringing up 50 run partnership with Sammy we lost a wicket. Things looked good for a second with the traino rat Jayden coming out to bat. Rocky picked two quick wickets with both Sam shnicking up for 6 and Douglas chopping one on after playing a Ricky Ponting-esque pull shot. Things got shaky until Keegs and Jayden steadied the ship before departing for well-made 24 and 39 respectively. Yusuf ‘cymbals’ Zain and Allan ‘key’ Hall finished the job for 4s, giving rocky a long drive after a 5 wicket loss.

Female B Grade

South Perth 5/187 (Harvey 3/33) def. Wanneroo 158 (Reichelt 99*)

Away to South Perth after last week’s epic result, the Roos bowled first at Richardson. South Perth opened brightly, reaching 64 before Bree, who bowled well, sent one crashing into the stumps. South Perth consolidated, pushing the score over 100, before Emma took two wickets in one over (both bowled) to exert a little pressure the other way. At 3/109 after 28, South Perth were in a good position to really push on.

In the back ten overs, wickets in hand helped South Perth get to a very competitive 5/187. Emma completed a good day with the ball, collecting 3/33 and adding a run out to her tally of dismissals as well.

Running down this total wasn’t going to be easy, and the pressure increased as wickets fell early, leaving the Roos at 3/23. However, Shenae had weathered the early storm and was joined in a 50 run partnership by Bronwen (12), which restored some balance. After Bron’s dismissal, someone really needed to go with Shenae, who was looking solid and showed strong intent to make the required runs. Kristen (10) built a good partnership with Shenae, but although the run rate was maintained at about 5 for the back half of the innings, eventually the Roos ran out of wickets, reaching a respectable total of 158 in just their second game of 40 over cricket.

Absolute class from Shenae – the Coach finished on 99* off just 108 rocks after carrying her bat, in a career best performance with the blade!

Midland-Guildford 85 (Allen 5/13, Quinn-Schofield 3/13) def. by Wanneroo 3/89 (Crafford 45*)

The Roos travelled to Lilac Hill for a rematch of their recent Grand Final against Midland-Guildford, welcoming two debutants in Elri Erasmus and Myla Fisher.

Bowling first, Chloe and Erin got us away steadily bowling an excellent length and a tight line that was hard to score from. Midland’s first wicket didn’t fall until the 12th over, but they had crawled along to just 33 without a boundary being scored. Talia was the wicket taker – on her way to a career best performance. She struck again shortly after with another edge through to Tene, who took a good low down catch. Shayna introduced Layla into the attack with immediate effect – wicket first ball – hit direct to Shayna at widish square leg (nice work Skip). Tene then chimed in with a direct hit run out from a wide ball to remove a dangerous batter before she was set and the Roos were up and about with Midland at 4/48. Elri, on debut, also bowled well in this period, settling into a pleasing line and length and enjoying the opportunity to bowl on turf. Layla continued to flight the ball well, as well as landing it in great areas. She was on a Hattrick after two in two with another catch to Shayna and a classy first ball stumping from the ever-vigilant Tene. Talia followed up with two in two, picking up an LBW and a bowled (awesome line Tahls) as well as sending another catch Shayna’s way in a dominant performance.

Two great spells here. Layla with 3/13 and Talia with an epic 5/13. Fantastic to watch the girls go about their craft. Chloe (1/10) chimed in with the last and MGCC were all out 85. Gettable.

In reply, the Roos lost Talia early after a mix up in the middle. Shayna made a quickfire 13 as Tene steadily built at the other end. Chloe and Tene then combined for a partnership that took the game away from the home team. The intelligent ‘lock the game away’ approach was a great exemplification of The Wanneroo Way. By the time Chloe was dismissed for 13, the score was 3/81. Polly was bumped up the order for her first hit in 17s and she hit the winning runs in style with a lofted drive over mid off for her maiden boundary. In a great knock that showed patience and class, Tene finished undefeated on 45*.

Well done Roos on a pleasing win.

Gosnells 128 (Billington 3/20, Eaton 2/20, Millar 2/23) def. by Wanneroo 8/129

The roo boys ventured out to the “lovely” Gosnells for the first game of 2022. Bowling first, we got off to a sketchy start with Caiden Eaton and Bailey Richards bowling a days’ worth of extras in the first 10, apparently it was swinging too much. Lachy Poulter came to the rescue, getting a start to the game with the first wicket. From then we put the squeeze on to hold the Gay St locals to 128. Deon Billington bowling was key to the restriction.

With the intention to knock the score over quickly it ended up being quite the challenge, Mitch Slattery falling on the first ball of the innings after missing the ball by a foot and still complaining to the umpire. The top order struggled to build momentum, with no real partnerships formed. In the end it required a captains knock from Kyle Millar with support from Bailey Richards (and the first six of his career) to see the boys home with two wickets to spare.

Second Grade

Wanneroo 10/134 (Kelsey 34, Stumpers 29*) def. by Gosnells 5/230 (Smith 2/36)

The two’s won the toss and chose to bowl first. Matthew Dzodzos and Hayden Stumpers opened the bowling giving nothing to the Gosnells batters. Doz and Captain Adam Smith both took early wickets leaving the opposition 2/35 after the 15th over. Gosnells were then able to put together handy partnerships around one batsmen who ‘Ben Stokes’d’, as they pushed off for 100 off the last 11 overs, leaving a chase of 230.

Openers Michael Kelsey and Blake Holly started steadily putting on 57 before losing our first wicket, that of Kelso on 34. The twos settled into a collapse losing 6/18 leaving us at 6/75. Hayden Stumpers and Donavinn Fryer counterattacked combining for a quick fire 37 run partnership but when Donny was caught we were soon bowled out for 134. A disappointing start to the year but we will look to bounce back against Rockingham next week.

Female B Grade

Wanneroo 9/119 (Salisbury 26) def. Subiaco-Floreat 118 (Stewart 4/14, Reichelt 3/11, Nicholls 2/21)

Subi-Floreat came to visit as the women’s 40-40 season got underway at Kingsway.

Emma lost the toss but wasn’t too unhappy to be bowling. Subi got away well however, notching 44 runs before Shenae picked up the first wicket. She struck again shortly after, claiming the dangerous number three – a good reward for her stump to stump line. Ella came into the attack with her tweakers, yielding immediate results as a snick was collected neatly by Tene behind the stumps. Subi consolidated a little after this, reaching 97, before Ella struck again, this time with a lofted catch to Sarah on the edge of the ring. Emma made a master stroke at this point, wheeling Emilie back into the attack after her opening spell. Bowling with good heat Emilie (2/21) picked up two wickets in quick time to crash through Subi’s middle order. Shenae (3/11) completed a good days work with another pole, drawing the batter into a false stroke with a classy catch completed by Emma. Likewise Ella, after a hardworking performance, was also rewarded with further success – she picked up two more wickets to really turn the screws, finishing with 4/14 off 6 excellent overs. Emma (1/29) tidied things up with the last wicket, seeing Subi all out for 118 after 29.4 overs – a very gettable target one would have thought.

The Roos didn’t have the best of starts, losing Shenae early. Tene looked solid but was out for 11 with the score 2/21. A middle order collapse then followed, with Subi finding a way through our defences, and all of a sudden the game looked to be slipping away at 6/33. Thankfully Eva was able to turn the tide with a fantastic innings that featured shots all around the wicket. Although she took the odd risk, Eva’s innings was technically chanceless, until she was run out on a no-ball for 26 to bump the Roos to 7/79 and to give the home team a sniff of victory. Roo hearts sank a little when Emma (18) who’d batted with style and combined with Eva for a 46 run partnership, fell soon after Eva departed with the score on 80.

But this Roo team bats deep. Ella and Emilie then put together a great little partnership, batting really well and punishing the bad balls when they came. When Ella was out, a further 21 had been added to the score, leaving the Roos with 18 to get, one wicket in hand, but with plenty of overs to go! It was edge of the seat stuff as Emilie and Kristen went about the chase. A feature of this phase was the hitting of a number of boundaries which got the home team closer to the target in a short space of time. In the end, Emilie (17*) hit the running runs after a great knock, with Kristen’s 11* off just 12 balls being exactly what we needed to get the win, 9 wickets down.

U17M (three games)

Gosnells 7/189 (Billington 3/28, Walker 2/27) def. by Wanneroo 4/214 (Brown 106*, Marinovich 73)

First game back after the xmas break and perhaps unsurprisingly it took the boys a bit of time to click into gear. Only one early wicket and a few dropped catches allowed Gosnells to build a couple of decent partnerships through the middle overs. Tight death bowling from Rhys and Cody limited Gosnells to 189 when at one stage we were staring down 220+. Cody with 3/28 and Rhys 2/27 the pick of the bowlers.

A flurry of early wickets had the Roos reeling at 3/16 until Tyler Brown and Jordan ‘Gordo’ Marinovich came together and produced a partnership for the ages. The boys batted intelligently early on, never letting the required rate get out of control and then cashed in later with some power hitting to put on a mammoth 174 in a partnership that had everything. Jordan ending up falling on 73 after the game was won and Tyler was 106no at the end of innings as we posted 4/214.

A great win going into Sundays T20 double header.

Wanneroo 4/104 (Brown 28) def. Perth 9/103 (Jessani 3/15, Gillespie 2/15, Walker 2/23)

Big weekend of cricket for the boys. After a good win in Saturday’s 50 over match against Gosnells they go to Abbett Park for a double header of T20s. The first being against 8th placed Perth. Skipper Matt Carroll was out for this game after being picked for Colts (well done Maff!), vice captain Owen Brown steps up to lead the side. Also back from 2s is Blake and Kane. Perth won the toss and batted on a green pitch.

Cody opened the bowling from the southern end and Owen from the northern end. Decent start from Perth with good intent and a few nice boundaries. A wicket for Owen in the 4th over (caught behind by Blake) removing the dangerous Will Turner didn’t slow Perth’s progress. Wil Filmer continued hitting regular boundaries to keep the runs flowing but a good spell from Rhys targeting the stumps with some full pitched bowling was rewarded with 2 wickets in succession removing Wil Filmer for 26 off 22 and Di Renzo for a golden. The next over was from Taz with his left arm orthodox and kept the pressure on with 3 wickets in his next 3 overs, one edged in the air to Riley at backward point, another edge caught behind by Blake, then an LBW. He finished with figures of 4-1-15-3. Riley came on for his first bowl in a while and got himself eyeing off a hat trick with 2 wickets in his second over, 2 good catches, one on the boundary from Rhys and a dive to his left at mid-wicket from Kane. Cody came back on and picked up the 9th wicket with a catch from Tyler at mid-off. Perth finishing with 9 for 103 with some steady batting towards the end setting a defendable target.

Wanneroo’s innings started with a boundary from Tyler then a couple of tight overs until Blake decided he had enough, dancing and smashing shot of the day six down the ground against the wind followed by 2 fours in the same over bringing the score to 0-20 off the first 3. The partnership continued with good rotation of the strike. The conditions weren’t easy with a stiff sea breeze and an up and down pitch to contend with. Spin was introduced in the 5th over with leg spin from the northern end. Tyler started the over with a boundary and a single but Blake holed out to mid on trying to smash it out the park, he made a run a ball 17. 1-34 off the power play. Kane came in and provided good support for Tyler who started middling the ball well coming off a ton the day before. Kane and Tyler fancied themselves against Morton (the left arm medium pacer), smashing him for a number of boundaries including a big six from Tyler over cow. Tyler eventually got bowled trying to sweep the leggy (Di Renzo) with one that kept low. Tyler ended up with a solid 28 from 28.

Tom came in with the score on 2 for 72 with Wanneroo cruising and Kane batting well. However an attempt at a big shot down the ground saw him bowled the next over for a quick and handy 22 off 20. 2 new batters at the crease with Cody joining Tom and still some work to do needing a further 32 runs off 9 overs. They ticked the scoreboard over for a couple of overs until Cody hit a nice cover drive for 4 and tried again on the next ball but played around it and was bowled. He made 6 off 6. Riley joined Tom at 4 for 87, the pair cruised to victory. Tom finishing on 9 not out off 12 and Riley hitting the winning runs unbeaten on 10 off 17.

In the end, an easy 6 wicket win for the Roos with 16 balls to spare.

Wanneroo 8/123 (Brown 35) def. by South Perth 7/143 (Brown 2/12, Jessani 2/19, Billington 2/29)

Weekend Wrap – last round before Xmas

First Grade

Wanneroo 70 (Billington 28) def. by Willetton 5/71 (Billington 2/18, C Eaton 2/21)

Wanneroo lost the toss and were sent in on a difficult pitch and unfortunately never got going after two early wickets. In the end we were bundled out for 70, Deon ‘Billy’ Billington showing some fight with bat at the end to top score with 26.

In the field the Roos showed really good fight with ball. Again on a pitch that was causing lots of issues we had the Dragons 5/50 but unfortunately they scrambled home. Eaton and Billy 2 each.

From the skip: Tough first half of year with player unavailability and injuries but some positives on the young core group coming through all have a performance to be proud of. We will look to get some continuity in second half of the year and string some games together to potentially push at a late finals run.

Second Grade

Willetton 129 (Richards 4/33, Fryer 3/21, Stumpers 2/25) def. by Wanneroo 4/130 (Varsani 58*,  Fryer 28*)

‘Twas the last round before Christmas and Wanneroo lost the toss, proceeding to bowl first. The Roos got off to a brilliant start, as some classy opening bowling from Hayden Stumpers (2-25) and Bailey Richards (4-33) had Willeton at 5-14 early on. From here, the batting side put on a few small partnerships and managed to scrap their way to a total of 129. Donavinn Fryer also fantastic with the ball, finishing with figures of 3-21.

The Roos got off to a somewhat shaky start, losing wickets at regular intervals to be left at 4-40. From here, Aryan Varsani and Fryer stepped up, putting on a wonderful partnership of 90 to guide the boys home, with the Roos finishing on 4-130, winning the match by six wickets with 23 overs to spare. Aryan finished on a well-made 58 not out and Donavinn supported him well by making 28 not out. The boys with a more than convincing victory.

From the skip: At the halfway point of the season the Twos are sitting in 5th position on the ladder, having won six games and lost three. Only one point separates us from being in 3rd position. It’s been a great start to the year from the Twos and we’ll be looking to push on after Christmas to solidify a position in the top three.

Third Grade

Wanneroo 4/223 (Pearce 97, Farrant 84) def. Willetton 140 (Walter 3/20, M Carroll 3/22, Santich 2/15, Quelch 2/26)

We were greeted to Kingsway 2 on a cloudy overcast day, a green looking pitch and scenes of chaos on the ones ground with the ball doing all sorts. Seeing all this Willeton won the toss and chose to bowl first… clearly they didn’t look and learn from the 4th grade result last week… bowl first at Kingsway 2 and be prepared to chase leather!

We did lose Timmy early but The Buegler Jack McDonald was watchful early negating the duke ball nicely. Kane Pearce, on 3rd grade debut, came in and looked like he was batting on a different wicket, quickly upping the run rate. Jack fell when the score was 40 which only brought man in form Kealey Farrant to the crease. The pair were in absolutely no trouble in their partnership of 164 until there was a mix up resulting in Kane being run out just short of his maiden grade hundred. Keals then selected power-drive, hitting a few lovely 6’s before he was out last ball for 84. We ended the innings with a more than defendable total of 4-223.

With the ball Jordan ‘Ooh aah McGrath’ Slattery opened up and did what he does – bowling maiden after maiden making it impossible to score. Meanwhile Q was hitting the pitch hard at the other end and was the beneficiary of some tight bowling picking up 2 quick wickets. Willeton put on a bit of a partnership before the skipper brought himself on to peg them back taking a couple of poles himself, one of them caught by a horizontal Kealey Farrant at first slip which was unfortunately not on the recently taken down Frogbox. Matt ‘Maffa’ Carroll and Tip’ Santich came on after that and put the game to bed, best figures Maf with 3/22 and Walter 3/20. Top win by the 3s lads heading into the break in a strong position.

From the skip: The Magees are sitting in 6th place coming into the Christmas break, with 5 wins, 3 losses. Each of the losses were winnable. Solid return, as we came into this season with a nearly completely new team, and have had to rely on a lot of new and younger faces. 7 juniors have played for us so far, and all at some point have had a hand in a result for the team. Our depth is a real strength at the moment and there is much promise for the future at Wanneroo.

Fourth Grade

Willetton 125 (O Brown 6/22 [inc. hat-trick], L Carroll 2/22) def. by Wanneroo 6/211 (Douglas 64, Williams 54, Hall 35*)

The top placed 4s finished off 2021 with a trip to Willeton, with some big additions to the team. Callum Doulas, Allan Hall and Cody Billington make their return after missing last round and a few surprise visits from Mathew Dzodzos and Alex Fitzmaurice to really strengthen the side before the break.

The skipper won the toss and elected to bat, the innings started off at a steady pace with runs hard to come by for Sam and AJ, after the first wicket had fallen Keagan began to find the boundary and lift the run rate for the roos with Sam turning the strike over nicely. The 4s really lifted their tempo when Callum ‘Duggo’ came to the crease, bashing 64 off not many balls and really showing his class. Sam continued to tick over at the other end and brought up his maiden senior 50 with a classy and well compiled 54 to anchor the team through the middle overs. The much awaited return to 4s for Mat looked exciting at first but ended fairly swiftly after a few nice boundaries. Hally finishing off the innings for the 4s with a real finishers knock of 35 and a few monster 6s to get the total to 6-211 off their 45 overs.

With a decent score to defend the 4s we’re confident heading out on the field, although an early array of boundaries from the Willetton openers made them think twice about their score. Fitzy got the roos underway with an absolute peach and Owen not long after with a sharp catch from Doz at first grip. From then their wickets fell in clumps, another couple of sharp catches, one a one handed snare from Callum off the skipper and one low to the skippers right off Doz really helped the roos show their dominance. Then the magic happened… 3 wickets to go. Owen Brown. Take a bow. Cleaning up the last 3 wickets of the innings in 3 balls to take a hatrick and also bring up his maiden 5 wicket haul finishing with 6/22 off 8.4 overs.  The Roos winning by a massive 86 runs.

From the skip: At the half way mark, the 4s are sitting pretty at the top of the tree on 54 points. The boys have started very strong and looked the business in the first half of the season taking out some of the top sides from previous years. And the mix between the older senior boys in the team and the young talent coming through has made for an exciting side who could be getting their first sniff of finals cricket for 3-4 years. Still a long way to go but happy with where the teams heading at the break.

U17F T20 Grand Final

Midland-Guildford 3/118 def. Wanneroo 9/116 (Bartholomew 49)

The WACA Ground was the venue for the T20 Grand Final between The Roos and Midland-Guildford. Results between the two sides has been split evenly during the season, with Wanneroo inflicting Midland’s only loss the last time the two sides met, by a slim one run margin.

Losing the toss and bowling on a green tinged but true WACA strip, the Roos were amongst it early, with Chloe (1/26) finding a nice outside edge to Shayna in slips, while Mathilda (1/11) did the same to the other opener (nice catching Shayna) to see MGCC sitting at 2/31. We then saw a very strong third wicket partnership which netted Midland 74 runs and took their total past 100. Aymie (1/16) broke the shackles by slipping another of her canny deliveries into the stumps. The last few overs were fairly tight and Josie rounded out the innings with strong final over, but Midland’s score of 3/118 was going to take some chasing.

Things didn’t go exactly to plan early as some loose shots saw the Roos tumble to 6/35, and at that point the game looked all but over. However, it was the signal for Chloe, who’d been quietly building her innings, to get going, as she started to hit through the line of the ball in a classy display of batting. What Chloe really needed was someone to stick with her, and she found that it Mathilda. Facing a run a ball chase, the girls built a magic 40 run partnership, taking on the bowling and the fielders with good effect.

A stroke of luck when Chloe was dropped by the bowler after a ferocious drive turned into a cruel twist of fate as the ball ricocheted onto the stumps as Mathilda was backing up – the end of a great cameo innings that gave the Roos a shot at victory. That brought Josie to the crease who, batting as only Josie can, continued to find gaps and boundaries, as Chloe continued her onslaught too. This partnership was worth 34 runs and although Chloe was bowled for 49 in the dying overs, the target was, incredibly, within reach.

Aymie, who’s batted once this season, joined Josie, followed by Erin, as the Roos kept fighting. Erin cleverly got Josie back on strike and it came down to Josie needing to hit a four off the final ball to force a super over. She connected well, sending the ball to deep long off, and for a moment it looked like it would make the rope…but it wasn’t to be. Two runs was the result as the Roos fell two runs short of Midland’s score.

An incredibly entertaining game to watch, although not the result we were hoping for. Well played to Midland-Guildford but also congratulations to both sides on a fantastic season and a showcase final.

Weekend Wrap – Dec

First Grade

Melville 10/162 (O’Day 3/31, Eaton 3/32, Billington 2/13, Poulter 2/38) def. by Wanneroo 254 (Newnham 89, Eaton 54, O’Day 32, Spangenberg 28)

After I lost my first toss for the season we were sent in on a 35 degree day to our delight. The pitch may have had a little in it early but it was playing a bit like Kingsway has been. At 4/36 we were in strife and Spangers had a hat trick ball to get through. I was in the change room still unpadding but supposedly he did stock standard Spang and cover drove the hatty ball for four. A good little partnership between him and Jimmy Newnham got us to 79 when Spang got out.

A great 90 run partnership between Jim and Mooga O’Day with some serious running between the wickets got us going and after Moogs got out Eaton batted with good intent and scored 54. Jim decided to change his gloves on 89 and got out the very next ball. Deserved a ton. 254 on a very slow outfield, I felt we had enough and it was nearly worth 300 on that field.

A great all round and professional performance with the ball saw not one Melville batsman get to 30. Lachy Poulter got the key wicket of Reed with an absolute seed through the gate to take the top of middle. A great opening spell from the big Chook saw them in strife at 3/38 with Poulter getting two key wickets. A small time later Mooga the genuine all-rounder as he will tell you bowled in a great partnership with Island Boy Caiden Eaton. A long spell of disciplined bowing by the two lads saw them collect 3/30 each with Billington chipping in with 2fa at the end of the day. We bowled them out for 162 at the stroke of tea, with Slattery taking two seriously good catches.

Well done lads as it was a serious bowling performance. Sending a message out to the rest of the comp!

Second Grade

Wanneroo 222 (Ardagh 53, Slattery 33, Kelsey 29, Holly 27) def. by Melville 6/226 (Smith 3/50, Fryer 2/33)

The morning started off with captain smudge winning the toss and electing to get runs on the new scoreboard. The openers got off to a great start with Michael Ardagh scoring a quick fire 50 before getting out a short time later. Wanneroo were going along at a good clip with score at 3/151 before a mass collapse saw the Roos lose 4/2. Jordan “big bomb” Slattery batting out of his skin made a very handy 33 including a maximum over mid-wicket. But we all would have heard about it as he has only mentioned it since 275 times. The Roos stumbled their way to 222 and had no success in the 4 overs they bowled at the end of the day.

The second week started with a great pitch report by Michael Ardagh as Vinnie was rolling the square and not the pitch which created some confusion. That didn’t stop the pitch having characteristics of Kingsway Road with no grass at all. Great toiling by all the bowlers with no wickets at 0/80 just after lunch. With one of those batsmen being on 70 Wanneroo needed something special. What better moment then for it to fall to Michael “I don’t know what happened” Kelsey getting a sky ball at mid-off. Finally the Roos had a chance to break through, or so they thought. Kelso had found a way to volleyball set it 3 metres away and drop it (can watch this on frog box at exactly 1 hour, 56 minutes, 32 seconds). With a chance go begging that batsmen would go on and make a ton. The score 152 before Roos got their first wicket and was an uphill battle from there. Adam Smith and Donavinn Fryer took 3 and 2 wickets respectively and Melville made the score 6 down and in the 89th over.

Third Grade

Melville 72 (Fitzmaurice 4/16, J Quelch 3/20, Walter 2/15) and 7/144 (C Quelch 4/58) def. Wanneroo 64

Kealey Farrant took a wicket. Now let’s never mention it again.

The Wanneroo threes arrived at the picturesque and windy Tompkins Park to take on table leaders Melville. We were met by mutterings and whispers from those involved in the morning junior’s game that there was ‘something in the deck’. The pitch inspection led to some confusion as it was just green and soft except for the parts that weren’t. Given this we were quietly ok with the result of the toss when Melville chose to bat.
Kookaburra in hand, we entered the field of battle with the twin towers (aka the Quelch brothers, aka Q1 and Q2, aka Des and Troy, aka Shane and Brett Lee, aka the Dutch imports, aka The Hemsworths) ready to strike from either end.

Carnage.

Josh Quelch kept up his great form with the new ball taking three wickets early. Melville stalwart Drew Porter put up some resistance but was undone by a beautifully flighted full toss by Matt Carroll. John Walter took two with his new-look wobblers and Alex Fitzmaurice swept up the tail with three in one over to finish with 4-16. Melville were all-out for 72.

Obviously happy with that result, but unfortunately we had to bat in the same conditions for the remaining 40 overs of the day. Well, almost same conditions. Melville opted for the duke ball and had two very recently A-grade bowlers to wield it. In very trying conditions runs were hard to come by. This was compounded by poor decisions in the dismissal of two batters who actually managed to get themselves set. With the middle order / tail exposed, Drew Porter came back on late in the day and made a terrible mess of the roo line-up, claiming 5-6. But at least it wasn’t as good as Alex’s 4fa.

The Roos were left on 9-64 at days end, still nine runs short. Skipper Walter was still in but off-strike, Matt Carroll was set to face the first ball next week.

The biggest partnership of the day was 19.

Plans and practice were on the agenda during the week. How do we score the runs? Who scores them? Where? Do we go aggressive or patient?
All for naught in the end as Cam Green got a peach on the 2nd ball of day two, with a violent in-swinging delivery clipping the top of off.

The Threes battled hard for the elusive reverse outright for the remainder of the day, notably with Chris Quelch bowling well to take 4 wickets, but it was not-to-be as the Melville players shut up shop to protect their first innings win.

Unfortunately we couldn’t walk away with any points, but cousins were found and I think solid experience was gained against what is likely to be the best bowling attack we will come across in 3rd grade this year.

Fourth Grade

9/347 (Santich 56, Wiggers 55, Carroll 44, Pearce 43, Maraldo 39, Singh 35) and 2/54 def. Melville 10/139 (Carroll 5/37, Maunder 2/27, Brown 2/38)

What initially looked to be a pitch that did something out at Kingsway 2, it was always a ‘win the toss and bowl’ day. And that’s exactly what the opposition captain did, and yet, there was a loud roar from the Roo boys as we found out we were batting, because if there’s anything you don’t do at Kingsway 2, is win the toss and bowl.

And so, the long day in the heat began for Melville as both Sam Williams and Yusuf “fast field leaver” Zain got the 4th grade side off and running. As a wicket fell, it brought the likes of Ajaypal “drip_killer_23” Singh to the crease for his crafty 35 which created a good platform for Steven “debutant” Wiggers to notch a clean 55 on his fourth grade debut no less, what a wonderful career he has ahead of him. Nic “the baseballer” Santich did what he does best again, contributing once more with yet another half-century (55). The likes of Kane “look-a-like seen at bar 1” Pearce, Jack “has a misso” Maraldo, and Liam “time for a great game” Carroll also adding handsome scores of 43, 39, and 44 respectively to the total. Owen “Rakesh” Brown and Jared “one net-session” Maunder having small cameos at the end of the innings both at over a run-a-ball to bring the team total to 9/347.

It soon became day two at Kingsway Sporting Complex, with the Roo boys ready to bowl out Melville as soon as possible in order to get on the beers (or waters, age-dependent). Our Venezuelan import Owen Brown got us off to a raring start, handsomely complimented at the other end by the now bowling all-rounder Liam Carroll with a wicket each in their opening spells. Soon after, Jared Maunder was brought on for his first spell this season, which didn’t get off to the best start, but managed to take his first wicket in only his third over, magnificently caught at mid-off by the man who doesn’t drop catches, Kane Pearce. By lunch, only 5 more wickets were required as Steven Wiggers joined in as Jared Maunder and Liam Carroll took another each. Well fuelled and rested, the Roo boys came back out to bowl, with another tremendous Wanneroo tea in mind. Rakesh Brown and Liam Carroll were the main wicket takers in this session, as Liam Carroll managed his first grade five wicket haul in what he’ll call the greatest spell of his life. At tea, Melville had been rolled for just 139 when we were happy to call it there, happy with the win, but the Melville captain disgusted with the loss, wanted to “teach his boys a lesson” by making them bowl after tea. It was decided that we’d bat until the drinks break, supplying 5 batsmen, although it wasn’t all what it seemed. Only two wickets had been lost, as Jack Maraldo decided he was thirsty, and yet the opposition captain thought otherwise, wanting to bowl beyond the drinks break. It was only the alcoholic nature after a home game that resulted in a feeling of unhappiness with the opposition. At the end of the day, the youth of the fourth grade side was over-joyed with their win and is looking forward to Willetton, hoping to maintain their number one position at the top of the league.

B Grade Female T20

Wanneroo 5/96 (Evans 39) def. by Midland-Guildford 4/141

In the final T20 round of the season, the Roos were home to Midland-Guildford. Before the match, two debutants were welcomed to the team with some wise words by Shenae and Toby, with Ayla Meintjes and Eva Salisbury receiving their Baggy Reds.

Batting first, Midland got off to a strong start, reaching 74 runs before they lost their first wicket, with Meg collecting a neat catch from the bowling of Kristin (1/36). Despite the hard work from the home team, the score would move to 136 before the next wicket fell, as Emma (1/9) continued her good form with yet another delivery crashing into the stumps.
Two run outs showed the Roos were still alert and ready, with Bree and Meg combining for a dismissal, followed by Shenae and Ayla. The focus on fielding at training is clearly paying dividends across our Female teams. At the end of their innings, Midland had scored 4/141.

The Roos were keen to chase down the target, but lost Shenae early. Meg (20 off 23) settled in to another good knock, hitting the ball with power and defending against some good bowling when needed. Ella looked well composed at the crease, playing some classy shots, but she was unfortunately stumped after a good piece of work by the opposition keeper.

Meanwhile Sarah set about building a great innings, playing shots to all parts of the ground as she looked to accelerate the scoring. She was joined by Eva, rocking Tene’s bat, who settled quickly and also began to find the gaps, valuing her time at the crease. Sarah eventually fell for 39 (off just 35), with Eva (15*) and Emma (6*) remaining undefeated at close of the innings. The Roos ended on 5/96.

Hats off to the B Grade team. Finishing 3rd on the T20 table in the Club’s first season of senior women’s cricket is a very respectable result, and the team will only continue to improve from here with the positive energy they’ve created and the support that’s around them.

U17F T20

Wanneroo 1/86 (Allen 34, Crafford 31*) def. Melville 9/85 (Beckett 2/10, Stillitano 2/15)

Our Under 17 girls took on Melville at Kingsway in a battle for second spot on the ladder in the last match of the T20 season.

Winning the toss and batting, Melville were in trouble early, losing both openers before the score reached double figures. Josie had started with a quick stump to stump line which netted an LBW which was followed by Tene collecting another caught behind from the bowling of Chloe (1/17), who again demonstrated impressive pace and bounce from the southern end.

Our first change combination of Aymie and Mathilda got stuck right in to Melville’s middle order. It began with Talia taking a high overhead chance (looking into the sun) from the bowling of Aymie (1/26), complemented by a full stretch diving take by Shayna off Mathilda which would be the catch of the year to date. Mathilda (2/15) struck again shortly after with a ball crashing into the stumps. In this period the girls claimed 3 wickets for 10 runs.

The pressure on the batters continued with Erin (1/4) coming into the attack with immediate results, dislodging the bails with her pacey, attacking line, whilst Layla’s well flighted deliveries landed in great areas and proved difficult to score from without the batters risking it all!

The pressure told when Josie made something out of nothing with a powerful throw from the boundary to Layla at the bowlers, resulting in a run out as the batters tried to sneak a second. Soph backed this up with a neat throw from inside the ring to Chloe, who did the rest! Great work from the Roos in the field!

Another wicket from Josie (2/10) to complete her economical spell rounded out the visitors innings at 9/85.

As they’ve done so often this season, Talia and Tene got the Roos away to a perfect start – in fact, their partnership, worth 74, almost saw us home.

Talia fell for 34 off 39 after a very well made innings in which her timing and shot selection were both very pleasing to watch. This was complemented by Tene’s knock of 31*, with her running between the wickets and intent to score featuring strongly. Great job done by the openers!!

The Roos passed the Melville total one wicket down, finishing 1/86, to claim second spot.

Melville 139 (Jessani 3/19, Walker 3/26, O Brown 2/9) def. by Wanneroo 8/145 (Pearce 35, Billington 26, Carmignani 25)

Melville won the toss and put us in the field on a very warm morning. Owen Brown picked up an early crucial wicket in his first over to have Melville 1/3, with his second wicket having Melville 2/16.

A small partnership built before Rhys Walker picked up his first wicket with wickets then steadily falling every 15 to 20 runs. Some very tight bowling from Taz saw him pick up 3/19 off his 10 overs, Rhys finished with figures of 3/26 off 9 overs and Owen 2/9 off his 5 overs.

We faced one over before end of days play which saw Riley Gillespie and Ben Carmignani face an over of spin and receive some not so supporting words from their opposition.

Second week we made our way back down the freeway to Melville on a much cooler day than the week before. Chasing Melville’s total of 139, Riley was dismissed fairly early in the piece closely followed by Tyler Brown, who was out to a juggling catch in the gully. Ben chipped away to make a solid 25 when another couple of quick wickets fell swinging the momentum back to Melville. With Kane Pearce losing batting partners, Cody Billington came to the crease where he and Kane steadied the ship, getting us close to the total and setting us up for a good finish. Cody lost his wicket on 26 with Kane following him with 35 runs.

In came our captain Matt Carroll to team up with Rhys to get us over the line. Matt finished with 11no and Rhys, with a couple of big hits, finished on 18no to help get the win which keeps us on top of the ladder.

Ladies Day T20 Wrap

Colts T20

Wanneroo 5/186 (Holly 85, Billington 51) def. Claremont-Nedlands 9/145 (Carroll 3/25, Stumpers 2/22)

The Roo colts rocked up to Kingsway on Sunday morning after an eventful 21st ready to continue the winning streak. After winning the toss and choosing to bat a huge feeling of relief came from Darcy Forssman who wasn’t sure on which ball to pick yet. A decent start and platform to the innings led Riley “goggles” Holly target the spinner in the 4th over, taking him for 16 which started the acceleration for the rest of the innings. At 2 down Deon “chief” Billington joined Riley at the crease and these two experienced Colts players led the way for the majority of the innings, forming a strong 102 run partnership. Riley’s 85 and Deons 51 were crucial to the side posting a competitive total of 186.

Claremont-Nedlands batted well but the total was far too big to chase. With the assistance of Matthew ‘Maff’ Carroll’s three wickets with left arm darts, two from Hayden Stumper’s right arm trajectory darts and with a direct hit runout from Darcy ‘what day of the week is it?’ Forssman Wanneroo were able to take the game and entertain the arriving Ladies Day crowd.

Premier T20

Wanneroo 1/156 (Sabburg 101*, Richards 45) def. Claremont-Nedlands 8/151 (Eaton 2/28, Richards 2/33)

With a strong start to the day thanks to the Colts young roos (joeys?), the Premier Roos team (mob?) were set to continue the entertainment for the Ladies Day festivities. Prosecco was flowing, parents, supporters, wives and partners were laughing and a certain yellow strip of cloth was formally unveiled (curtesy our own Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts).

On a pretty goof T20 wicket the Roos bowled first. Bailey Richard’s got us off to a great start by getting Perth Scorcher Nick Hobson out for a duck. The Roos kept persisting with pressure but opening batter Gollan found a way to hit a boundary every over in the first six. A very good piece of fielding by Micheal ‘Mooga’ O’Day saw the roos get the wicket they needed. A few overs later Rob Richards found the batsmen short of his ground with a direct hit from the boundary. The Roos kept persisting with pressure from some very good death overs from Bailey Richard’s and Caiden Eaton. A solid team performance kept Claremont restricted to 8-151.

The batting innings was taken away by one man…..”Strawba”. Chris hit 101* with 5 reverse sweep, slap, slog, whatever you want to call it, sixes. To the absolute delight of a packed Kingsway gazebo Chris made the Claremont bowling attack which included Matt Kelly, look like a 4th grade side. Chris and Rob Richards opened the batting and went at 10 an over from ball one. The boys took the Claremont attack down and made light work of their total of 151.

Unfortunately with two runs needed Richo, chasing a deserved 50, ended up getting caught on the boundary trying to put one on the second ground. Next ball Riley Holly finished the game with a 6 over the deep mid-wicket boundary. The Roos cruised to victory and need to win the next game to make finals. Well batted Strawba.
