Female B Grade – Bye
Premier Youth League
The second last round of the T20 comp saw the Roos travel to South Perth. It was pleasant under the trees but fairly warm out in the middle as we began our innings.
Talia and Tene got us away to a flyer, with 19 runs coming off an erratic first over. The girls saw the score past 50 before Talia fell, but her 28 off just 23 balls had set the tone for the innings, with some sweet timing and positive intent.
Shayna joined Tene at the crease and we witnessed a great second wicket partnership of 63, seeing us through to the end of the 20 overs without losing another wicket. Tene carried her bat to finish with a very well made 38* while Shayna raced along to finish on 33*. Both girls played some really good shots and enjoyed a happy knack of finding the gaps to keep the score building.
The Roos total of 1/115 looked very defendable, even more so after a solid start with the ball saw a couple of wickets fall early. Josie got things started, bowling with good rhythm and earning a snick behind to Tene. Chloe did the same an over later – with Tene diving one handed, low towards her left to happily collect what was at best a half chance, and South Perth were 2/8.
The batters settled for a while but the introduction of Aymie into the attack brought results, with a dipping delivery cannoning into the base of the stumps (not the first batter to be undone by that ball) to arrest the scoring at 3/40. This very quickly became 4/40 when our 12th, Polly, having just come onto the field, collected a very tidy run out from covers, with a neat, accurate throw to Layla at the bowler’s end. Layla’s tweakers then resulted in a skied catch to Mathilda (aka Buckets), and all of a sudden South Perth were 5/41. A fantastic purple patch of play which showed the girls were working hard as a bowling/fielding unit.
The wickets continued to fall. Aymie collected a nice caught and bowled to finish with 2/14, Chloe took a good catch off Layla, whose final figures were again a very tidy 2/15 and Erin, also bowling with good rhythm and pace chimed in nicely with a wicket (1/15), as one was popped up to Josie.
With Aymie and Josie combining for a run out in the final over to really cap things off, South Perth finished at 9/89 after 20.
In a super end to the T20 season, next week’s Round 10 match against Melville at Kingsway is set up as a virtual semi final, with the winner going through to the GF the following week.
