First Grade
Joondalup 3/230 def. Wanneroo 227 (O’Day 46, Eaton 43, Billington 41)
The 1s were at Iluka this week and batted first after losing the toss. We got off to a shaky start as the Joondalup bowlers took control to leave us at 3/34 after the first powerplay. After Kyle “funky” Millar and Connor “spangers” Spangenberg were dismissed, the roos were in serious trouble at 6/84. Caiden “bison” Eaton and Deon “Washington” Billington started the rebuild with both batting maturely finishing with 43 and 41 respectively. Some later order hitting from Michael “moogadonna” O’day saw the roos reach a competitive total of 227 which seemed impossible 30 overs before.
The roos worked hard for their first wicket which was taken by Lachlan “big chicken” Poulter after a great catch at backward point from Chris “strawbs” Sabburg just after the first powerplay. Joondalup then took control putting on a 90 run 2nd wicket partnership. Despite two more wickets falling, they chased down the total at the start of the 48th over.
Onto next week where the roos face Fremantle at Stevens Reserve.
Second Grade
Wanneroo 9/184 (Slattery 54, Fairchild 44, Stumpers 42*) def. Joondalup 9/169 (Stumpers 2/22, Slattery 2/32, Smith 2/35, Forssman 2/36)
After 2 fighting wins by the twos that take on Joondalup to hopefully go 3-0 to start off the year
Captain Adam smith won the toss and elected to bat first, Mitch Slattery and Tim Harris walked to crease with confidence after a solid warmup. Joondalup started their bowling innings with spin which Tim fancied but unfortunately run past one to be stumped early on. Not long after Kealey Farrant feathered one to the keeper, leaving us 2/14 and the spin gamble looking like a good one for Joondalup. Rob Fairchild and Mitch steadied the ship however, putting on a 100 run partnership which gave the team a huge platform to put on a winning total. Mitch brought up a very well batted fifty but unfortunately fell not long after getting out lbw playing his favourite shot, the reverse sweep.
Skipper Smith took a moment to run out water to Fairchild with instructions to anchor the innings and bat to the end. Unfortunately next ball Fairy accidentally hit the ball to long-on but batted really well for a solid 44. Hayden stumpers walked out to crease and was in T5 mode hitting bombs left right and centre. With Adam ‘Smudge’ Smith doing a great supportive role these two put on a 30 run partnership in the space of 3 overs to push the roos to 184.
Smudge and Jordan Slattery started us off with bowling stump to stump and frustrating the Joondalup openers and despite not picking up wickets the pressure was building. Adam had a Ricky Ponting moment and brought on Fairy which brought us our opening wicket at a score of 60. The pressure kept building and building with Sharrad Jessani and Darcy Forssman tightening the spin screws. Death bowling was spot on by smudge, Jordan and Hayden with the run rate getting way too high for Joondalup to even have a chance. All the wickets were shared around.
The twos are now 3-0 and are top of the table and looking forward to taking on Fremantle next week at home.
Third Grade
Joondalup 9/186 (Walter 3/16, Brown 2/44) def. Wanneroo 157 (Rae 54, Walter 27)
The 3’s this week were away and ready to go against the reigning premiers Joondalup who we unfortunately came up short to last season in the grand final. We had again lost the toss and were asked to bowl first in overcast conditions.
Despite good bowling from our opening bowlers J Quelch and A Fitzmaurice, runs for Joondalup came early with one opener looking in reasonable touch with a barrage of attacking lofted shots that made no error finding the boundary and making it look as if it was going to be a long day in the field. However, luck would turn to our favour with O Brown coming in as first change picking up a run out and getting the dangerous opening batsmen out caught on the long-off rope. This was further backed up by the skipper himself John “walts” Walter by picking up a much deserved wicket of the No. 4 batsmen after displaying relentless fast bowling. This run would continue with another talented youngster M Carroll coming in to bowl by picking up the no.5 batsmen caught behind and again further backed up by Quelch ‘clean bowling’ another in order to leave the score at 5-81.
The boys further fought on by some quality bowling from M Carroll and the fast bowling cartel by keeping the run rate at a steady low rate, whilst still picking up some well needed wickets. The boys thereby ended the first innings at 9/186 after 45 overs which would in turn give us a very possible target to chase down.
Chasing down a total of 187 for the win and unfortunately losing a key opening bat due to a shoulder injury earlier in the game in Sam Williams, the Wanneroo lads were keen to chase down the total and come out with the win.
Despite losing a wicket early on, youngsters T Blythman and J Rae fought hard to steady the ship by achieving a 57 run partnership. Although we had gained momentum, Joondalup had answered back by grabbing 2 quick wickets and evening the battle between the 2 sides. Despite in-form batsmen J Rae continuing his great streak of runs by scoring a very solid 54, momentum slipped our way as Joondalup began to rip through are line-up leading to a score of 7-116 and further putting pressure upon the remaining batsmen. Although this was the case, excellent fight and experience was shown with skipper J Walter and J Quelch attempting to keep the game in reach with some huge hits from the big man Quelch and the skipper keeping the runs ticking over. However, despite the great fight shown by the 2 bats, Joondalup sealed the deal by grabbing the last couple of wickets and resulting in the roos being all out for 157 and unfortunately falling short against the reining premiers.
Fourth Grade
Wanneroo 159 (Pearce 56, Maraldo 28) def. by Joondalup
With the sun shining on him, Skipper Liam Carroll continued his fine coin tossing form and elected to bat. The game was on. The 4s started well early with Yusuf Zain getting wrapped on the pads and given out but only to be called back by the Joondalup skipper after it turns out Yusuf smashed the ball onto his front pad. Not convinced this writer would have done that, but fair play to Joondalup. Excellent sportsmanship.
Finally someone from Joondalup held onto a catch and Jack Maraldo departed for scratchy 28. Then from there things seemed to look bright with the better Holly and Big Kane smacking the joondi bowling attack, until the better Holly charged down the wicket to only miss the ball and pull his groin trying to do the splits, for a well-made 23. From then things went sour. With Kane departing for a classy 56 our collapse seemed evident with us losing 6 for 23. That was highlighted by our leader Liam, after he hit the ball onto his elbow, then his thigh-pad and then it trickled onto the stumps. That was it, Roos 4s rolled for 159.
Bowling and Fielding wasn’t fun. Joondi chased our 159 one wicket down in the 39th over. With Bandarda taking our only wicket with a not so 4th grade catch by Liam. Touché to the Joondalup batsmen.
B Grade Female T20
Midland-Guildford 8/38 (Harvey 3/9, Beckett 2/5) def. by Wanneroo 6/89 (Stewart 34, Bothma 28)
Out at Midland the B Grade side featured three debutants – Talia Allen, Josie Beckett and Mathilda Stillitano. Batting first, the Roos compiled a competitive 6/89. The standout of the innings was a 42 run second wicket partnership between Megan Bothma (28 off 25) and Ella Stewart – Ella ended up with a well made 34 from just 41 balls. With the ball, the Roos were right on top from the start, with Emilie Nicholls claiming a wicket in the first over, followed by two shortly thereafter by Emma Harvey, who finished with 3/9. Mathilda (1/6) and Ella bowled tight spells, with their 8 overs combined costing just 11 runs. Josie bowled with good pace to claim 2/5, with MGCC falling a long way short at the end of 20 overs, reaching 8/38.
U17F T20
Rockingham-Mandurah 76 (Quinn-Schofield 5/7, Haddrill 2/13, Giandzi 2/15) def. by Wanneroo 1/77 (Crafford 28)
The Under 17s traveled to Lark Hill to take on Rockingham-Mandurah, who got off to a good start with the bat, reaching 1/27. Aymie Haddrill (2/13) changed the momentum of their innings with a couple of great poles, one of which included a super sharp stumping by Tene Crafford. Breanna Giandzi (2/15) also hit the stumps and bowled with good pace in this period. Shelby Dowsett, on debut, was also among the wickets in her first game. The real game changer was Shayna Jesani’s decision to wheel Layla Quinn-Schofield into the attack. Her left arm leggies saw the score go from 5/61 to 9/72 in seemingly no time, with Layla on her way to a very tidy 5/7 and RMCC all out 76. Setting about the run chase, Tene (28 off 32) and Talia Allen (24* off 31) played really smart cricket, running well and piling the pressure on the fielders. A quickfire 14* from Shayna saw us home at 1/77.
