Wanneroo 97 (Varsani 43, Sabburg 39) def. by Willeton 8/175 (Sabburg 3/23)
The ones hosted the mythical losers at Kingsway 1 in what we hoped would be a turnaround from the previous week… The ones lost the toss and bowled on sneaky hot day.
Poults got the Roos off to a great start rattling the timber and dismissing their opener for 0. From then on it was a good contest between bat and ball with the Roos managing to take wickets in regular intervals. Our spiritual leader Bruce (Sabburg) took two chances back to him off his own bowling in one over and the dragons were 3/40. From then on tight bowling and excellent fielding made scoring tough for the opposition. Brodie made his debut a grade bowling appearance and took a crucial wicket to bowl brilliantly in partnership with Deon Billington. Pick of the bowlers were Sabburg (3/23 off 10) and Poulter (2/27 off 10).
The batting was less than desirable. Sabburg made 39 and Aryan made 43
Second Grade
Willeton 4/164 def. Wanneroo 161 (O’Day 57, Carroll 33)
On a day that some would consider not cold (H word ban still in place), the momentum filled 2s made the trek to the Utopia that is Burrendah 1. With the threat of a robbery quite high, a positive result at the toss was needed. Donnie’s call for a bowl first was in vain, as Moogs poor tossing continued. An insertion of the two’s meant Donny was validated in his call for a bowl.
At 6 for spit, the gents with a kangaroo on their shirt were in a world of hurt. A nice little partnership between our glorious leader (he’s away this game) O’Day and Deons brother, brought some respectability to the score, with Maff “I’m pretty happy with that horn” Carroll and Owen offering some much-needed runs at the end of the innings. Moogs the stand out batter, making a classy 50 odd to give us a total of 161. Something to work with?
It wasn’t something to work with. Despite a strong bowling performance from the roo gents, the Burrendah wicket had flattened out substantially. A far cry from the nibbling nightmare earlier in the day. Wickets shared around between the boys, but all in vain as Willetton took advantage of the flat wicket, getting the score 4 down. A tough loss for the 2s, who now look to win all remaining games to make finals.

Wanneroo 6/205 (Hudson 79, Marlborough 35) def. Willeton 9/204 (Walter 3/30, Fitzmaurice 3/41)
The Roo’s lost the toss and were sent questioning life decisions. The first wicket coming via one ‘hell’ of a comeback. Alex ‘Cobra’ Fitzmorris snagging his first with an absolute seed to start his second over, after a chaotic first. Going into the first of many sessions the roos were well in control, however, a strong 4th wicket partnership put Willetton in the driver’s seat. It was tough going with the 40+ heat and flat wicket but nothing traumatised us more than ‘batters taking singles off good balls’. All in all a good comeback, Wanneroo restricting Willetton to 205. Frizzy & Walts the pick of the bowlers with 3 each.
It was another strong start with the innings, with the run rate in a good position. Bradley Marlborough wasn’t only cleared last minute but cleared the rope. Hitting a tidy 35 (29) to get us in a strong position. From there it was the Hudo show, with Braiden ‘remember the name’ Hudson whacking an impressive 79 off 44. Asserting dominance at its finest with several cruisy singles after imploding over cow corner. Jack McDonald was in fine form, with a handy 31* & Slatsball (Jordan) “Prince of Porto” hitting 22* to guide the roos home to a convincing win.
Fourth Grade
Willeton 4/81 def. Wanneroo 80
The 4s lads made a trip to the one and only Burrendah 2 which is one of the grounds you do not want to play at when it’s 40°. With some quality negotiations with the umpire from Liam and a winning toss meant we managed to get the game started 10 minutes early and we sent ourselves in to bat.
Little did we know this pitch had some demons in it (not an excuse I promise) and we found our top order demolished at a not so cozy 4-19 after 8.1 overs. The middle order knuckled down for a few overs with the help of Liam ‘Leemo’ Carroll and Hamza ‘how many clouds are in the sky’ Saleem, and a cheeky top score of 19 from Rhys’ Piece’ Walker. It gave us a slim chance to perform a miracle. We ended up all out for 80 off 23.2 overs and it was our turn to stand in some nice summer weather.
Things started pretty well for us in the field, with Liam taking the first wicket with an impressive catch at 2nd slip from Jared ‘Juice’ Maunder who then rightly so celebrated his own classy piece of work. Then, a sneaky caught and bowled from Rhys ‘earthquake’ Walker meant that we had them 2/8 with still a slim chance. Their number 4 comes out and makes 34 off 29 and really made the game their own. We put up a decent fight in the end having them 4/81. The game only saw 44.2 overs bowled in the end which gives us things to work on heading into the 2-dayers next week.
