It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for the Roos, with the Seniors struggling on Saturday against Willetton but a successful start for our T20 campaign on Sunday.
Saturday
1st Grade came heartbreakingly close to posting back-to-back victories, losing by two wickets. Skipper Christian “Christo” Smith made an innings-saving 98, but a team total of 9/184 wasn’t quite enough in the end.
2nd Grade restricted Willetton to 5/206, but faltered in their reply despite a gallant effort from newcomer Nick “Full” Barr.
3rd Grade stumbled chasing a modest total of 148. The evergreen Captain Andrew “Slatts” Slattery ran out of partners to finish undefeated on 54.
4th Grade salvaged some pride for the Mighty Roos, posting 7/187 after a commanding opening partnership from Vaughn “The P-Man” Quinlan (74) and Cam “Sean Connery” MacDonald (45). In reply Matt “Purce” Purcell took 3/33 as Willetton was restricted to 9/157.
The 17s restricted Willetton to 9/157, with C. Smith taking 3/31, whilst the 15s bowled Willetton out for 201.
Sunday
A solid all round performance from the Roos launched them to a T20 1st round victory. Wanneroo made 7/139 with Matt “Anthrax” Spoors and Jacob “Not Mitchell” Johnston leading the way with 42 and 36 respectively. In a nailbiting chase, Gosnells fell just 5 runs short with Chris “Quizmaster” Quelch taking 2/20.
Our Colts hit the panic button against Gosnells, dismissed for just 72 chasing a modest total of 126.
The Vets started their season with a bang, knocking off Gosnells by more than 100 runs. The Grey Kangaroos made 9/219 with Johnny Kuljis (65*) Chris “Jimmy” Barnes (50*) scoring more runs than their years. In reply, Gosnells were bundled out for 111 with Brenton “Senior Smudge” Smith taking 3/21.
